西予市・久万高原町
The Shikoku Karst, one of Japan’s three major karsts, is a highland region extending for about 25 km east to west along the border between the prefectures of Ehime and Kochi. It offers spectacular views reminiscent of the European Alps, and its highest peak reaches approximately 1,500 meters. It’s an enjoyable place for cycling as long as you drive to an elevation that’s appropriate for your skill level. Here are some destinations we recommend for those interested in visiting the Shikoku Karst.

START
Shishimaru, a direct sales shop for Nishitani agricultural produce
This tour, which begins at the parking lot of Shishimaru, a direct sales shop for Nishitani agricultural produce (open only on Sundays from April to the end of November. Currently closed.), lets you enjoy the products and flavors of the highlands on a road just under 50 km long that takes you around a region that includes the Shikoku Karst. Although that’s a short distance for experienced cyclists, the elevation gain is about 1,300 meters, so it’s a suitable tour for intermediate and advanced sports cyclists.
There are vending machines and restrooms in the parking lot, but there is nowhere to get refreshments for a while after the start, so you should prepare refreshments in advance in advance or buy buns filled with red bean paste at Shishimaru.
Although a comfortable road bicycle is the optimal way to take the tour, that isn’t necessarily the only way to enjoy it. You can also ride an e-bike to enjoy the scenery and food of the highlands, or you could ride a gravel bike (a bicycle that can handle gravel and off-road conditions) or mountain bike.
Note: If you need to park a vehicle at Shishimaru for a while, you should use a parking space behind the store.
Experience magnificent nature in all its grandeur!
Akagomizu waterfront
The town of Kumakogen, where the Akagomizu waterfront is located, is also known as the Karuizawa of Shikoku. Located here are the headwaters of the Niyodo River, which has been repeatedly ranked as having the best water quality in Japan in water quality surveys conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The water of the river that flows along the Akagomizu waterfront is also wonderfully clear, and the current is relatively calm, so in summer, visitors can play in the river or simply gaze at the murmuring stream.

The magical springs of the Shikoku Karst
During construction of Jiyoshi Tunnel to connect the towns of Kumakogen and Yusuhara, spring water began gushing out of the ground. The water flows from limestone karst earth, making it a medium-hard water that is pleasant to drink, with a delicious taste that permeates the body. The cycling route will give you an opportunity to fill your water bottle before you begin hill climbing, but you can also get water here on your return trip.

Tengu Plateau
First, you ride to Hoshifuru Village Tengu where there is a place to have lunch. This spot is about 12.5 kilometers from Shishimaru, the direct sales shop for Nishitani agricultural produce, and some 800 meters higher in elevation. The ride will proceed at a pace that allows you to reach the restaurant at Hoshifuru Village Tengu during its lunch hours (11:00 to 14:30, last orders at 14:00).
Most of the dishes available at the restaurant are special items made with local ingredients. We recommend the steak rice bowl, which is made using wagyu beef! The spectacular view from the restaurant will tempt you to linger, but the next part is the highlight of the tour.
Leaving the restaurant and continuing the ascent, you will soon see Tengu Plateau, which is the part of the Shikoku Karst with the highest elevation. The Shikoku Mountains, which are 1,000 meters high, will be down below you, and you can even see the Pacific Ocean on a clear day!
Lunch and spectacular scenery! Even greater highlights await on this tour!
Hoshifuru Village TENGU(restaurant)
Hoshifuru Village Tengu is located on a ridge on the border between Ehime and Kochi prefectures. It offers a spectacular view that will eclipse the fatigue from your long hill climb. Lunch will be all the better when combined with a scenic view that shows you the best of the Shikoku Karst. The facility also has overnight lodging, and luxury plans for staying overnight to enjoy the nighttime scenery of the Shikoku Karst are available!

Godan Plateau
Godan Plateau is one of the best spots for viewing the Shikoku Mountains across the unique karst landscape of white limestone stones (karrenfeld limestone) that look like a flock of sheep and mortar-shaped depressions (dolines). Nowhere says “Shikoku Karst” like this place! From spring to fall, cattle graze in the area, and the idyllic landscape of limestone, grasslands, and grazing cattle is a soul-soothing experience that really feels like you’ve travelled to another land.

Jiyoshi Pass
After crossing Jiyoshi Pass in the central part of the Shikoku Karst, you reach the final stage of the tour: the Shikoku Karst road, which extends for about 25 kilometers east to west. The climb up the Jiyoshi Pass is not an easy one, but once you get past it, you will be greeted at Onogahara with a spectacular view that will make you forget your hardship and will reward you for your efforts so far.
There are several stores where you can enjoy confections made with fresh milk surrounded by the pastoral landscape, so be sure to check them out before you leave.
Enjoy unique confections made possible by dairy farming amidst a pastoral landscape.
MILKEN
This store is located at an altitude of 1,200 meters on the western edge of the Shikoku Karst. Visitors can enjoy Noppono Milk Soft Ice Cream, Milk Brûlée Crêpes, and other confections produced at the company’s own dairy farm in a relaxing atmosphere. Around mid-August, highland vegetables, whose flavor is enhanced by the temperature swing between morning and evening, are also available for sale.

Onogahara
Onogahara is an area marked by expansive plateaus and beautiful nature. The road, which stretches across the plateau at an altitude of 1,000 to 1,400 meters between herds of grazing cattle, offers technical corners, changes in temperature due to the difference in elevation, and fragrantly scented winds, making it a destination where cyclists can experience the true thrill of cycling.
