Test Your Legs with the Wild Route Around the Northwest of Oshima Island

The northwest part of Oshima Island has a rose park and a mountain pass. It is a stretch of road where you can enjoy a well-balanced cycling experience. You can enjoy the rose hip ice cream, a local specialty, with the scent of flowers from Yoshiumi Rose Park. As you head north along the island’s west coast, the Tanoura Pass appears with a gradient exceeding 10%. As few cars pass by, you can cycle slowly at your own pace. Once you reach the top of the pass, a stunning ocean view unfolds before you.

At the Miyakubo Fishing Port and Noshima Suigun Restaurant located on the northeast of the island, you can experience the auctioning of fresh fish that have just been brought ashore (the first Sunday of every month). You can also enjoy a tidal current experience in which you will face the rapid currents of this sea area once known as the most challenging in the Seto Island Sea. (Boats operate from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, departing every hour on the hour, with seven departures per day. This service is not available on Mondays.) While enjoying the sights, you will break a sweat and develop an appetite ready to enjoy a delicious lunch next.

Clear the Steep Hills of the Second Half of the Trip with Delicious Food and Sweets

We now enter the second half of the trip. Across the southeast area of the island, there is a road that crosses a traditional fishing village, as well as a road with few cars and continuous steep ups and downs. This part of the island is sure to give you a taste of what cycling is all about.

For lunch, head to Konanowa in Tomoura. A restaurant seemingly out of a picture book, where time passes slowly and you might just stay for quite a while without realizing it. Aim for the finishing line while recharging your batteries with delicious food and sweets.
