伊予灘・佐田岬(八幡浜市・大洲市・伊予市・伊方町)
This article introduces a trip from Iyo City to Cape Sada at the westernmost tip of Shikoku. This course starts at Shiosai Park in Iyo City and heads to spots where you can enjoy the diverse history and scenery of Ehime. Such places include Shimonada Station, known as the closest station to the sea in Japan, the historic townscape of Iyonagahama, where Ryoma Sakamoto is said to have stopped while fleeing from his domain, and the terraced fields in the hilly areas of Yawatahama. Cape Sada, where this trip ends, is a fantastic location where you can simultaneously gaze over both the Seto Inland Sea and Uwa Sea. Cape Sada is well known as Japan’s longest and narrow peninsula where you can see as far as Kyushu on a clear day.

Yuyake Koyake Line
The “Yuyake Koyake Line,” which runs along a beautiful coastline, is the nickname given to the section of National Route 378 that connects Futami Town in Iyo City and Nagahama Town in Ozu City. The horizon is blocked by hardly any islands, allowing for a gorgeous sunset over the sea. This spectacle has been chosen as part of Japan’s 100 best sunsets.
With a view of the calm Seto Inland Sea, you can enjoy a relaxed ride to downtown Yawatahama City on this mostly flat and straight road while soaking up the sound of the nearby waves and sea breeze. On your way, you’ll find Shimonada Station. Known as the closest station to the sea in Japan, it is famous as a photo spot and chosen as a location for all kinds of films and TV dramas.

Futami Service Station
With the concept of “Every day is Marine Day,” Futami Service Station offers various events to enjoy the sea throughout the four seasons of the year. It boasts an observation deck to look out onto the Seto Inland Sea sunset, a restaurant that uses local produce, and a store packed with regional goods. The adjacent campsite is also popular with visitors.

The town of Nagahama in Ozu City and the Honai area in Yawatahama City are rich in history and culture. Nagahama, a port town that flourished from the Edo period to the early Showa era, is home to all kinds of historic buildings and old townscapes. The area also features the Nagahama Bridge, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property by the Japanese government. You will also find the Tomiya Kinbei Residence, where Ryoma Sakamoto is said to have spent his last night in Shikoku after leaving the Tosa domain.
The Honai area of Yawatahama City, meanwhile, thrived with various modern industries during the Meiji era. There are many buildings that reflect its glory years still standing today. This part of the route alone offers enough to explore and enjoy for an entire day.
The Nagahama and Honai areas offer a chance to step back in time and immerse yourself in Japanese history
Nagahama Bridge
Nagahama Bridge, Japan’s oldest operational drawbridge, was completed in August 1935. It is the pinnacle of engineering technology of its time. Locally it is affectionately called the “Red Bridge.” Today large vessels no longer pass through the bridge, and it is opened and closed once a week (every Sunday at 1:00 p.m.) as part of regular inspection work. Why not head to the bridge when it opens and closes to catch it in all its glory?

The former residence of Sojuro Utsunomiya
The Honai area in Yawatahama City features a townscape from the Meiji era, with numerous buildings built from the Meiji era to the early Showa era. The former residence of Sojuro Utsunomiya is a house built in 1901 and was once used as a clinic. While at a glance it appears to be Japanese-style architecture, the roof is curved and the ridge tiles contain a weight mark on them. It is a building that blends Japanese and Western architectural styles, featuring intricate craftsmanship, including brackets supporting the entrance canopy and lattice windows.

Yawatahama City is rich in marine and mountainous natural resources and enjoys a thriving agricultural industry thanks to its hilly areas. Ferries operate from Yawatahama Port to Kyushu, so you could always plan a trip to Kyushu from here.
Yawatahama City has all kinds of restaurants specializing in champon, the region’s local specialty. You can enjoy tasting all the different variations from the well-established restaurants to the new, unique ones too.
Aside from champon, the Otoge Zuido Tunnel, which was an important transportation route connecting Yawatahama City and Ikata Town, is also famous as a mysterious and fascinating spot where a tunnel exists within another tunnel.

Oto Zuido Tunnel
This famous tunnel, known by the locals as the “Gulliver Tunnel,” has a unique structure where another tunnel appears inside once you enter. The tunnel was due to be expanded together with the surrounding roads upon completion, but the emergence of a plan to develop a new national highway midway through the project meant that construction work was cut back, thus leaving it in its current form.

The roads have been relatively flat up to this point. Here on, however, the route becomes an intermediate/advanced-level course because of the road’s steep inclines and declines unique to peninsula roads. Just like Yawatahama Port, ferries to Kyushu also run from Misaki Port. As there are not many points to stop off and recharge along the way, we recommend grabbing some food and drink if you come across a service station or a convenience store.
Cape Sada, at the westernmost tip of Shikoku, is also known as the “Wind Cape.” There are wind turbines located here as the wind is relatively strong. Some turbines are installed close to the road, so you can gaze up at them in all their glory.
National Route 197, which runs through the central part of the peninsula, is called the “Melody Line.” It is known for being a route where drivers can enjoy the melodies created by the vibrations of the car while driving over this uniquely designed road. Even cyclists can stop to enjoy the music made by the passing cars.

Ikata Kirarakan Service Station
This service station underwent renovation work back in March 2016. It is a cycling oasis, with cycling racks, rest spaces, and water stations available. It is home to one of the few fish tanks in Japan where you can interact with the fish by giving them food. It is a cyclist-friendly service station where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea and Uwa Sea from the observation deck on the roof.

This trip, which began in Iyo City, started with enjoying the gentle coast of Iyonada while connecting with the history and culture of the region. While the sights of the beautiful coastal scenery provide a feeling of tranquility, the road gradually becomes steeper and more challenging. That being said, the stunning view from Shimonada Station, delicious champon in Yawatahama, and the many other great sightseeing spots will give you an energy boost before eventually arriving at Misaki Port. There is about 13 km left to go until the finishing point of Cape Sada Lighthouse.
The breathtaking scenery from the westernmost tip of Shikoku awaits you at the end! (*The photo is of the Cape Sada Lighthouse parking lot.)
Enjoy a breathtaking sea view at Cape Sada, the westernmost tip of Shikoku!
Cape Sada Lighthouse
Cape Sada Lighthouse, located at the westernmost point of Shikoku, offers a beautiful panoramic view of where the Uwa Sea and Seto Inland Sea meet. On a clear day, you can even see as far as Kyushu. While you can access the lighthouse parking lot by bicycle, it is about a 20-minute walk to the lighthouse itself. We recommend taking a key to lock your bicycle when parking up, as well as comfortable shoes for walking.
