The “Shimanami Kaido” is a route that every cyclist dreams of visiting at least once. It is the nickname of the Nishi-Seto Expressway, which connects the islands of the Seto Inland Sea between Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, and Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, through seven bridges, and the sea route linking these idyllic islands is full of attractions such as the beautiful scenery of the islands and delicious gourmet local cuisine. Matsuyama Airport

The trip begins at Matsuyama Airport

It takes about one and a half hours from Haneda Airport to Matsuyama Airport. If you take the first morning flight to Matsuyama, you can fully explore the city from the first day. You will be welcomed by “Mikyan,” the official mascot of Ehime Prefecture. When flying with your bicycle, pack it in a bag (or box with cushioning material) that meets the regulations of the airline company and check it in directly at the airline’s counter. Different airlines charge different fees and offer different services, so we recommend that you check in advance. After successfully assembling your bicycle in front of the cycle stand at Matsuyama Airport and mounting your bags, you’re ready to go.

Recommended Spots in the Matsuyama Area and Dogo Onsen Area

First, you will head to two staple tourist spots, Dogo Onsen and Matsuyama Castle

    • Dogo Onsen Honkan

The Dogo Onsen Honkan is the symbol of Dogo Onsen, which is said to be the oldest hot spring in Japan. The main building, a national important cultural property that has been undergoing conservation and repair work for quite some time, reopened for business in July 2024. With the addition of two new private rooms, there are now many ways to enjoy the main building.

    Imabari-Dogo Hamakaze Kaido

Finally to the “Imabari-Dogo Hamakaze Kaido” that connects Matsuyama and Imabari

The “Imabari-Dogo Hamakaze Kaido” which runs from Matsuyama to Imabari is approximately 50 km in total length. Continue on National Route 196, which mostly runs along the coast. You can cycle with the ocean on your left, but you must be very careful because of the heavy traffic. If you get tired, we recommend resting at a stopover spot along the route. Since there are few places to eat along the Hamakaze Kaido, be careful when you take your lunch. We recommend making a stop at “Michi-no-Eki Kazahaya-no-sato Fuwari” a roadside station located about midway between Matsuyama and Imabari. Bike racks are also available, making it a popular resting spot for local cyclists.

On the second day, finally, you will head to the Shimanami Kaido. The entrance to the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, the most scenic of the seven bridges on the Shimanami Kaido, is about 6 km from Imabari Station. From Sunrise Itoyama, the base of the Shimanami cycling route, head to the Itoyama Observation Deck. From the observation deck, visitors are overwhelmed by the spectacular view of the straits and islands of the Seto Inland Sea, where huge tankers come and go, and the huge suspension bridge with a total length of 4.1 km. The most exciting part is the exhilarating feeling as if you are riding a bicycle over the sea.

    Imabari City Murakami Kaizoku Museum

Learn about the history of the Murakami pirates who controlled the Seto Inland Sea route

The Murakami pirates, who came to prominence through Ryu Wada’s novel “Murakami Kaizoku no Musume” (The Murakami Pirates’ Daughter), emerged in the Nanbokucho period and became influential throughout the Seto Inland Sea, especially in the Geiyo Islands, during the Sengoku period. There were three powerful families active in the area: the Kurushima Murakami family, the Noshima Murakami family, and the Innoshima Murakami family, but the Noshima Murakami family, which was based on Noshima, did not belong to any of the feudal lords and maintained its own uniqueness.

After departing from WAKKA on Omishima and enjoying a boat trip with a view of the Tatara Bridge from the sea, the boat arrives at Iwaki Port. Kamei Ryokan, which matches the atmosphere of the port town as if time has stopped, is the final inn on this trip. If WAKKA, the hotel you stayed the day before, is a typical modern lodging facility that represents the Reiwa period, then this hotel could be regarded as a facility which embodies the Showa period. The building’s appearance is truly tasteful and creates a sense of nostalgia befitting the last night of the trip.

    Yumeshima Kaido

Rediscover the charm of the Yumeshima Kaido!

On the first day, you took the “Imabari-Dogo Hamakaze Kaido”, followed by the “Shimanami Kaido” on the second and third days, and on the fourth and final day, you will go to the “Yumeshima Kaido” to conclude your trip. The Yumeshima Kaido is a remote island highway that connects the four islands of Yugejima, Sajima, Ikinajima, and Iwakijima in Kamijima-cho, Ehime Prefecture, via three bridges. Even if one were to go around the four islands in a circle, the cluster of islands is about 50 km long, making it a cozy and lovely place to visit. Although it is often overlooked because it is not connected to Honshu by a bridge like the Shimanami Kaido, once you visit this area, there are many attractions that will make you want to come back a second and even a third time.

    Yugejima

Touring the spectacular sights of the seventh island, Yugejima

Yugejima is an island of contrasts, with the western side that is inhabited by people and the eastern side that remains rich in nature. There is a scenic road on the northeast side with a spectacular view of the Seto Inland Sea. The entrance to the road is a narrow uphill between houses on the north side. Hill-climbing in search of the horizon that should be visible beyond the repeated ascents and descents.
