Shortly after leaving Tokawa Station and heading downstream along the Shimanto River, you will reach “Michi-no-Eki Shimanto Toowa.” This area is famous for chestnuts, and the “shimanto ochakuri café” on-site is highly popular for its freshly made Mont Blanc. The black tea served here is made from 100% Shimanto tea leaves, offering a true taste of the region. The roadside station is filled with a vast selection of local snacks, with the most popular being “Shio-kenpi” (salty-sweet potato sticks). With many chestnut sweets available in small packages, they make perfect energy snacks for the road ahead.

The “Chinkabashi” or submersible bridge is an iconic symbol of the Shimanto River. Primarily built of stone, these bridges are designed without railings to withstand being submerged during floods and are still used by locals today. The bridges along the Shimanto River are designated as Important Cultural Landscapes of Japan. Reflecting on the local lifestyle and history while riding across is one of the highlights of this trip. You can see many fish swimming in the crystal-clear water, but remember to keep your eyes on the road while riding!

Located at the confluence of the Shimanto and Hiromi Rivers, “Michi-no-Eki Yotte Nishi-Tosa” follows the concept of “Tennen” (natural/local). From vegetables and sweets to river delicacies like ayu (sweetfish), eel, and Japanese mitten crabs, everything is sourced from the local area. The must-try here is the salt-grilled ayu. Available in three sizes (Small: 300 yen, Medium: 500 yen, Large: 1,000 yen), the large ones are impressively sized and very satisfying. The tender, clean-tasting flesh (with no fishy smell) and the perfect touch of salt provide a great boost during your ride. For something unique, try the fried butterfly-cut ayu (300 yen).
