[19.3km] An Extraordinary Experience on Sea and Land
The Yumeshima Kaido, located in Kamijima Town, Ehime Prefecture, is a route that connects four islands south of Ikuchijima and Innoshima on the Shimanami Kaido. One of these islands, Iwagijima, is home to Mt. Sekizen, which stands in the center of the island and is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot with around 3,000 cherry trees. The island is also known for its thriving citrus cultivation, taking advantage of its warm climate with little rain, earning it the nickname "the island of green lemons." On this tour, you will start your day with a boat-fishing experience and have your catch prepared for lunch. In the afternoon, cycle to a vegetable farm to learn about and harvest fresh produce. The highlight of the trip is a climb up Mt. Sekizen (about 370 meters high) for a 360-degree panoramic view, followed by a fun descent to finish the cycling tour.

Start Point
The starting point is Iwagi Fishing Port, right in front of “Live Fish & Inn Yoshimasa,” where we stayed the night before to go fishing first thing in the morning. That’s right, the day starts not with cycling, but with fishing. We promptly boarded the fishing boat, bowing deeply to the captain and asking, “Please, let us catch a sea bream!” The captain teaches you everything about the tackle and how to fish, so even beginners can enjoy themselves without worry. Thanks to the captain, our catch of the day was three sea bream and one flathead fish.

At Yoshimasa, which operates a sport-fishing boat, you can go out fishing in the morning and have your catch prepared for lunch. The cooking method varies depending on the fish, but for sea bream, you can choose from sashimi (sugata-zukuri), deep-fried whole, ara-daki (fish head simmered in soy sauce), nitsuke (simmered in soy sauce), tempura, tai-meshi (sea bream rice), or ara-jiru (fish bone soup). The sea bream we caught was prepared as sashimi and deep-fried whole. The deep-fried fish is wrapped in lettuce and eaten with shredded green onions and red miso; its aroma, texture, and flavor are a triple delight.

After getting off the fishing boat and eating our catch for lunch, it’s time to cycle around Iwagijima. First, we explore the island’s historic town area. The Iwagi Museum of Local History (admission is free), located 400 meters from Iwagi Port, was once the island’s main inn (honjin) where the lord of the Iyo Matsuyama domain would stay during his sankin-kotai procession in the Edo period. From there, we return to Iwagi Port and head to “Limone Plaza.” Here you can buy the island’s fresh vegetables, citrus fruits, and souvenirs. The most popular souvenir is the lemon cake, made with plenty of juice from the island’s specialty lemons, its delicious flavor fills your mouth.

From Iwagi Port, we head north in a clockwise direction. Cycling with the sea right beside you is exceptional. With few guardrails, you’ll find yourself stopping often to take pictures. We cycled 1.5 km to “Shimashima Farm” for a harvesting experience, where we learned about seasonal vegetables, citrus varieties, cultivation methods, and even cooking tips. The farm owner, Mr. Harada, has such a deep love for his vegetables that we were completely engrossed in his stories. The view of the sea from the farm is also stunning (reservations required).

The trip ends with a hill climb up Mt. Sekizen, located in the center of Iwagijima. At the summit, there’s an observatory with a 360-degree panoramic view, offering a chance to enjoy the beauty of the Seto Inland Sea’s many islands and the changing seasonal scenery. In spring, about 3,000 cherry trees color the mountain along the road to the summit. According to locals, the sunsets are also spectacular year-round. This time, since we ascended from the east side of the island, we took a short detour past Okogi Port to Iwagi Zosen (Shipbuilding) at the northernmost tip of the island. The overwhelmingly massive scale of the shipyard that appears before you is truly impressive.
