【29km】Experience a Sustainable Island Ride
The Yumeshima Kaido (Kamijima Town, Ehime Prefecture) is a cycling route connecting four islands located south of Ikuchijima and Innoshima on Shimanami Kaido. On Yugeshima, one of these islands that served as a manor estate of To-ji Temple in Kyoto during medieval times, visitors can experience traditional salt-making and learn about its history. Enjoy stress-free cycling with the blue Seto Inland Sea at your side, on an island with not a single traffic light. At a café within the campground on Ikinajima, savor hamburgers made with local wild boar meat that utilizes regional resources. The grand finale is the healing experience of Kyo no Kojima Angel Road, a sandbar path that appears at low tide during spring tides – a thoroughly satisfying cycling adventure.
The information provided here is current as of December 2025.

Starting Point
The starting point is the “Setouchi Koryukan,” a visitor and community hub located right near Yuge Port. It also serves as a rental cycle terminal for Yugeshima Island, where you can rent various types of bicycles, including cross bikes, E-BIKEs, and children’s bicycles. In addition, there is a tourist association desk where you can get tourist information, recommended cycling routes, and gourmet information.

“Yuge-no-sho” is a place where you can experience ancient seaweed salt making. In the facility’s kiln, you can learn about the process of making salt by putting seawater from around the island, slowly simmering it over a wood fire for many days to form salt crystals, and then boiling it over a charcoal fire. Mr. Murakami, the salt master, will talk about a wide range of topics, from the history and production of Yuge salt to “thalassotherapy (ocean therapy).” Yuge salt, which is still presented to To-ji Temple today, has a smooth salty taste and a lingering umami flavor, and is said to have many repeat customers because it goes well with any dish. The experience course starts with making earthenware from clay and takes about an hour to complete the salt-making process. (*Reservation required). You can buy Yuge salt and salt soft-serve ice cream at “Shima de Cafe” near Yuge Port.

From Yugeshima, cross the Yuge Ohashi Bridge to Sashima. Then, cross the Ikina Bridge to “Sound Hamada Campground” located in the northern part of Ikinajima. The “Aged Gibier Burger” served at the cafe in the campground is said to bring out the sweetness and aroma of the boar’s fat by grilling the patty without oil, using only the fat that comes out of it. For drinks, the “Citronnade Squash” made with organic lemons from the island has a refreshing taste and is recommended after cycling.

Return to Yugeshima and head for the 142-meter-high Kushiyama Observatory in the south. There is a fairly challenging climb along the way, but you can use the power of an E-BIKE to get to the foot of the mountain, and from there, you can enjoy a 10-minute hike on the trail to the top. From the observatory, you can see Sashima, Ikinajima, Iwagijima, Innoshima, Uoshima, and Toyoshima islands, and enjoy a 360-degree view of the beautiful archipelago.

The last part of the trip is to “Kyo-no-kojima,” which can be seen just beyond “Takahama Hachimanjinja” in the northwestern part of Yugeshima. It is said to be a popular “power spot” because it can only be crossed during the low tide of the spring tide. To end the day, we had the very popular “Chicken Bar,” which can only be purchased at the New Yamazaki Daily Store Yuge branch in Yuge Port.
